A magnetic recording medium for thermally assisted magnetic recording is provided to perform signal writing at higher temperature than the signal sustain state by differentiating the exchange coupling energy between two magnetic layers in the signal writing and the signal sustain state. A magnetic recording medium comprises an underlayer(30), a magnetic recording layer(40), and a protective layer(50) which are stacked in sequence on a non-magnetic substrate(10). The magnetic recording layer is inserted between magnetic layers(41,43), including an exchange-coupling control layer(42) magnetically combined. The coupling energy(JW) in signal writing and the coupling energy(Jr) in signal sustain state satisfy the relation of 0 <JW<Jr.
