An electro-optical device, an electronic apparatus, and a method for detecting an indicating object are provided to perform an optical detection function of a specific region and a position of the indicating object by detecting the external light. A ground potential is supplied to a common electrode. Whether the potential level of the common electrode is zero or not is determined(S201). An object image is picked up by an optical sensor when a data potential is applied to a pixel electrode(S202). The difference data between the picked up object image and the object image data is detected(S203). When the potential level of the common electrode is 1, the object image is picked up by the optical sensor(S204). The difference data between a reference image data and the picked up object image data is detected(S205). The touch state is determined by comparing the detected difference data with the predetermined level(S206).
