A concrete railroad tie is provided which utilises a tie 1 having a peripher al rib 5, 1mm high, around the rail seat to contain adhesive 12 to bond a thick wear plate 8 to the tie. The surface of the tie is well below the top of the plate to reduce the penetration of abrasive materials between the rail pad 13 and the plate 8. This combination inhibits abrasion of the tie for the life of the tie.
