The invention concerns a carrier (1) for transporting a payload into an orbit, whereby the carrier, during or after the release of the payload, is located in a transfer orbit or in the orbit of the payload. The carrier (1) comprises a means (18) for altering the orbit thereof with which the carrier (1) can be brought from the transfer orbit or from the orbit of the payload into another orbit. The means for altering the orbit is preferably provided in the form of an electrically operated attitude control system and ensures a final elimination of the carrier.
