PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the coherence of a laser beam emitted by a semiconductor laser using photonic crystals. SOLUTION: A semiconductor laser using photonic crystals has a chirp structure of gradually changing structural parameters prescribing laser modes in the plane of the photonic crystal. In the plane of the photonic crystal, the laser beam having the wavelength and the phase determined according to each structural parameter is locally generated from each part where different structural parameters are set. By smoothly changing the structural parameters in a gradual chirp form, the laser beam with the wavelength and the phase smoothly changing in the gradual chirp form is emitted.
