PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flaky tungsten oxide particle having a high light transmissivity. SOLUTION: The flaky tungsten oxide particle is prepared by mixing a layered tungsten oxide, which is prepared by mixing a layered bismuth tungstate or the like and an acidic compound and eluting bismuth or the like, and a basic compound having a neutralization equivalent of 0.05-3 to hydrogen (H) contained in the layered tungsten oxide in a liquid medium, releasing hydrogen contained in the layered tungsten oxide and intercalating the basic compound between the layers and then exfoliating the layers. The flaky tungsten oxide particle thus prepared has an absorption peak in the range of wavelength of 250-280 nm but does not have an absorption peak in the range of wavelength of 300-800 nm in its ultraviolet visible light absorption spectrum. A preferable flaky tungsten oxide particle has the maximum width and the minimum width in the range of 10-10,000 nm, respectively, and a thickness in the range of 0.5-10 nm.
