PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processor and a data processing method for making the memory utilization efficiency improved, when compressing data for storage. SOLUTION: The data processor 1 transfers band data before compression by a compressor 5 to a hard disk 6 for storage for the band data, when a full detection section 9 detects deterioration in compressibility, since the amount of data after compression is larger than that prior to compression, when the data are transferred after compression to the hard disk 6 via the toggle buffer of a memory 12 for storage, by compressing the image data on the memory 12 in band units by the compressor 5. Hence, even if the compressibility of the compressor 5 is poor, at the worst, the amount of data prior to compression can be maintained, and utilization efficiency of the hard disk 6 is improved.
