PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization illumination device which is excellent in productivity and low in cost. SOLUTION: The polarization illumination device includes; a plate-like transparent resin base material whose retardation value (Re) is at least 500 nm at a wavelength of 550 nm, and whose dispersion in the retardation value (Re) at a wavelength of 550 nm is at least 100 nm both in its width direction and in its length direction, or whose dispersion in optical axis is over 30°; a grid polarizer which is laminated on the surface of the one side of the transparent resin base material and includes a plurality of grid lines which are parallel to each other; and a light source.
