1 - (21,31 - Dichloropropyl) - 4 - carboalkoxy - 2-pyrrolidones in which the alkoxy group contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms (see Group IV (b)) are used as plasticizers for vinyl resins, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, and vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymers. In examples a mixture of vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer with 1-(21,31, dichloropropyl) - 4 - carbomethoxy - 2 - pyrrolidone (or the corresponding 4-carbobutoxy compound) and a small amount of stearic acid is blended on a two-roll rubber mill at 130 DEG to 150 DEG C. to form a homogeneous mix which is then rolled into sheet form and allowed to cool. The compounds also impart self-extinguishing properties to the resins on ignition.ALSO:The invention comprises 1-(21,31-dichloropropyl) - 4 - carboalkoxy - 2 - pyrrolidones wherein the alkoxy group contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms. They may be obtained by treating the corresponding 1 - allyl - 4 - carboalkoxy - 2 - pyrrolidones in an inert organic solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, with at least an equimolar proportion of chlorine at 0 DEG to 35 DEG C. Examples are given for the production of compounds in which the carboalkoxy group is carbomethoxy and carbobutoxy respectively. The products may be used as plasticizers for vinyl resins (see Group IV (a)) and are also active against the helminth Hymenolepis mana. The 1 - allyl - 4 - carboalkoxy - 2 - pyrrolidones used as starting materials may be obtained by reacting the corresponding dilower alkyl esters of itaconic acid and monoallyl amine. 1 - (21,31 - Dichloropropyl) - 4 - carbo - (21,31-dichloropropoxy)-2-pyrrolidone which is stated to show no plasticizing action for vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymers may be prepared by chlorinating the allyl ester of 1-allyl-4-carboxy-2-pyrrolidone, the allyl ester being obtained by reacting allyl amine with allyl itaconate. |
