The invention relates to a haemostatic agent comprising at least one porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in solid form, selected from the group consisting of uncross-linked PVA with a molecular weight of between 15,000 and 400,000, cross-linked PVA and mixtures thereof. The porous PVA in solid form is provided for use as a haemostatic agent in human and veterinary medicine.
