A device and a method for controlling brightness in a display device are provided to prevent the disappearance of image outlines caused by the entire darkness over a screen when controlling a lamp according to a screen. An image is stored if the change of the brightness of the image is sensed while the image is being displayed(200,205), and the average brightness of the stored image is calculated(210). The outlines of the image depending on the average brightness is recognized(215). Compensation power for compensating the outlines of the image is calculated(220,225), and is applied to a display device to adjust the brightness of the outlines(230). The image is stored when the brightness of the displayed image is decreased. When applying the compensation power to the device, positive compensation power is applied to a bright region in the outlines and negative compensation power is applied to a dark region in the outlines. |
