<p>In an article having a working surface intended to be subjected to friction, carbon monofluoride is provided as a solid lubricant on, or in, the surface. Carbon monofluoride is prepared by passing F2, which has been passed through a liquid oxygen trap to remove HF, over graphite at 400-500 DEG C. The article may consist of metal, alloy, synthetic resin, glass or precious or semi-precious stone, e.g. ruby, or sapphire. A film less than 1m thick may be obtained by mechanical application, e.g. dusting or rubbing, or by evaporating liquid from an article dipped in a suspension of CF in water, or inert organic liquid. Porous articles may be impregnated with such a suspension and subjected to ultrasonic vibrations before evaporating liquid. CF may be incorporated in articles during production, e.g. by adding CF to metal powders, e.g. Cu, Au, Ti, Al, Ni, bronze or brass, which are subsequently sintered at below the decomposition temperature of CF, e.g. 500 DEG C. The articles may be parts for machinery, instruments, clocks, and watches, particularly main springs, escapement parts, arbors, pivot pins, or bearings for clocks or watches.ALSO:In an article having a working surface intended to be subjected to friction, carbon monofluoride is provided as a solid lubricant in the surface.
