<p>Disclosed is a method of cooling, using a solid salt or a mixture of salts, an at most partially solidified molten metal during fractional crystallisation, so that the metal crystals formed have a purer composition than that of the molten metal. The salts used are alkaline earth metal halides, alkali metal halides, or a mixture of both types. The method for putting the salt into the metal covers the possibility of adding it from above, from below, or directly into the metal. Also disclosed is the removal of the molten salt for reuse, either from the top if it is less dense than the molten metal, or from the bottom if it is more dense. Also disclosed is the use of this method specifically for aluminium.</p> |
