<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a non-natural active mutant of a beetle luciferase, and a DNA encoding such a mutant. <P>SOLUTION: This mutant luciferase is obtained from beetles. The mutant luciferase is different from a corresponding wild type luciferase by a fact that it generates a biological luminescence having peak intensity at a wavelength different by at least 1 nm from the peak intensity of the biological luminescence generated from the wild type enzyme.
