The device has a generator regulator (1) comprising a regulator controller, which controls a switch (6) at an exciting circuit (5). A resistor (10) e.g. thermal resistor, influences a total resistance of the exciting circuit, and is positioned between the switch and an excitation winding. The generator regulator is realized in the form of a chip, and the resistor is a part of an integrated component of the chip. The regulator controller switches the resistor after starting of a vehicle for a predetermined time period. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a motor vehicle generator.
