PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of shortening the time for moving a recording head from a position apart from a reference position to the reference position. SOLUTION: A printer 1 moves a recording head 2 in the main scanning direction to record on a recording medium P. The printer 1 comprises a recording head movement control means for controlling the movement of the recording head 2, a marker 25 disposed between the recording medium P and a reference position BP of the recording head 2, and a marker detection sensor 14 which moves with the recording head 2 for detecting the marker 25. The means for controlling the movement of the recording head 2 controls the movement speed for moving the recording head 2, which is located at a position exceeding a predetermined distance L from the marker 25 to the recording-medium P side, at a high speed when moving to the reference position BP in at least part of a period until the marker detection sensor 14 detects the marker 25 and at a low speed after it detected the marker 25.
