[Also in Group XXXIX] A cryotron comprises a gating conductor 42, Fig. 4, and a control conductor 40 which extends along a length of the gate conductor and applies a magnetic field of progressively greater intensity from one end of the length to the other. With a constant voltage V2 across the conductor 42, the current flowing therein is a substantially linear function of the control current. The cryotron may be constructed of thin films as described in Specification 862,178. This control conductor 84, Fig. 12, extends along a length of the gate conductor 82 in zig-zag fashion and is of progressively greater cross-sectional area along the length. The magnetic field intensity applied to the gate conductor 82 increases in steps along the length and the direction of the field changes at each step. The control conductors are constructed of " hard " superconductor material such as niobium and the gating conductor are constructed of " soft " material such as tantalum.
