A switch mode power supply device and a method for supplying power are provided to prevent malfunction and drive the device stably by reacting on a state of an output power when the load is large. A switching mode power supply device(100) includes a converter(10), a light emitting unit(30), a light receiving unit(40), a switching control unit(50), and an indicating unit(60). The converter converts an input power source into the output power of the fixed level. The lighting-emitting unit emits the light when the level of the output power is above the designated value. The light receiving unit receives the light from the light emitting unit and informs the level of the output power. The switching control unit switches the operation of the converter according to the level of the output power through the light receiving unit. The indication unit changes the size to indicate the level of the output power to the switching control unit according to the size of the load required for converting.
