The present invention relates to an industrially usable process for recrystallizing alkali metal and alkaline earth metal tricyanomethanides. In the process, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal tricyanomethanide is initially charged in an aqueous solvent mixture having a boiling point at 1 bar of not more than 95°C, any alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halide which precipitates is filtered off and the solvent is distilled off to at least such an extent that the recrystallized alkali metal or alkaline earth metal tricyanomethanide precipitates.
