The present invention provides a device and a method for handling messages. An interface processing unit selects one from service processing units to be the service processing unit of the message; if the service processing unit is needed to operate the tunnel processing to the message, the message is sent out after being operated with the tunnel processing; if other service processing units are needed to operate the tunnel processing, the message is sent to the service processing unit needed to operate the tunnel processing to the message. By applying the proposal of the present invention, as the message is processed uniformly by the service processing unit, the session state doesn't need to be stored in both the service processing unit for operating the tunnel processing to the message and other service processing units, and the synchronic process does not need to operate between the service processing unit for operating the tunnel processing to the message and other service processing units. Thus the complexity of message handling is greatly reduced, and the system bandwidth is saved.
