The dimensional distribution of raindrops (N0 asterisk ) is deduced directly from the differential phase difference between r0 and r1 and from integral of the apparent reflectivity Ze, raised to a chosen exponent. The exponent chosen (b) is one which verifies KDP // N0 asterisk = a(Ze // N0 asterisk )b; KDP is the rate of variation of the phase differential along a ray, a and b are specified by the type of precipitation considered and temperature. Method of estimating precipitation rate for rain only generating negligible attenuation, using bipolar radar. Has the following stages: (a) radar measure over a given interval (r0, r1) for a ray trajectory, the differential phase (/=FDP) and the apparent reflectivity (Ze) along at least one of the polarizations (H or V); estimate the value (N0), representative of the raindrop dimensional distribution, from the phase difference between r0 and r1 and from an integral of a function of the apparent reflectivity (Ze) along the interval (r0, r1); deduce the value for the precipitation rate at a point from N0 asterisk and the apparent reflectivity at this point. An Independent claim is also included for a precipitation estimating device. |
