A meta data encoding/decoding method and an apparatus thereof are provided to determine update or consistency of meta data without decoding the meta data. A media signal including a media object is decoded(1010). Meta data corresponding to the media object is decoded(1040). The meta data decoding process comprises the following step. If meta data which will be decoded is consistent with previously-decoded meta data, decoding of the meta data is omitted(1030). In decoding the meat data, the location information of corresponding meta data is extracted from the media object, and the meta data having the location information is decoded by using the extracted location information of the meta data. |
