A color image forming apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to correct an alignment error of a vertical direction by amending offset of a vertical direction easily when a relative location between a laser scanning unit and a development unit is changed. Plural laser scanning units(20K,20C,20M,20Y) respectively output synchronizing signals according to a color. Plural development units(30K,30C,30M,30Y) are prepared in correspondence with the plural laser scanning units. The plural development units respectively include synchronizing signal detectors for detecting the synchronizing signal. A correction unit corrects offset of a vertical direction which is preset according to a pulse width of the synchronizing signal by color detected by the synchronizing signal detector. A video controller outputs video data by color according to the offset of the vertical direction corrected by the correction unit.
