923,263. Sewing-machines. R. GRASSHOFF. Feb. 1, 1962 [Feb. 1, 1961], No. 3865/62. Class 112. A sewing-machine 14 including a work-supporting head 9 is mounted on a carriage 10 which can be raised and lowered relatively to a stationary working surface or table 1 while the sewing-machine is running, the work head 9 being received in an aperture 8 in the table 1. Guide columns 11 attached to the carriage slide in sleeves 12 secured to the legs of the table and counterweights 20 are attached to cables 19 which pass over pulley 43 and are attached at 41 to bars 40 connecting the columns. Alternatively, balance springs may be provided. The carriage is moved vertically by a foot pedal 28 attached by a lever 27 to a shaft 5 which is connected to the carriage by a cam or, as shown, by a linkage comprising an arm 29 secured to the shaft 5 and a link 30 pivoted to the carriage at 33 and adjustably pivoted at 32 to the arm 29. The sewing-machine driving motor 16 is mounted below the carriage 10 to move with it, the motor starter being operated by a cable 22 actuated by a pedal 21. The cable 22 passes over the shaft 5 and around a roller carried on a lever secured to the shaft before passing to the starter so that the length of the cable is adjusted as the carriage moves. |
