A process for the aerobic microbial conversion of organic wastes such as garbage into compost which comprises initially removing any matter unsuitable for composting, retaining the material in a column of a conversion apparatus for 3-24 hours, recycling the material and passing external air and fermentation gases in countercurrent through the material, is characterized in that the apparatus includes a container having an inlet at its upper ends, vertical or diverging walls leading downwardly therefrom to an outlet at its lower end and conveyer means for moving materials from the outlet upwardly to the inlet, the entire apparatus being enclosed but being provided with normally closed openings whereby air or other foreign substance may be added to the material. The process is preferably carried out in the following stages (a) aerobic fermentation takes place; (b) fresh air is added and temperature controlled at 70 DEG C.; (c) large quantities of fresh air are added and the material is turned several times; (d) still more air is added and the material is circulated continuously; (e) fungus is produced by allowing the material to stand, and temperature is increased. A separate tower may be associated with each phase of the process and the material may be transported by variable speed conveyers from one tower to the next. |
