PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens which has a wide viewing angle, a high variable power ratio and aberrations satisfactorily corrected. SOLUTION: The zoom lens has a first lens group having positive refractive power, a second lens group having negative refractive power, a third lens group having positive refractive power, and a fourth lens group having positive refractive power in order from an object side, and varies power by changing space between the respective lens groups. The first lens group has at least one positive lens, and satisfies conditional expressions: 1.80<n<SB>1p</SB>and 50<ν<SB>1p</SB>(wherein n<SB>1p</SB>: refractive index of the positive lens andν<SB>1p</SB>: Abbe number of the positive lens).
