In a self-clamping three-jaw chuck, the jaws 5 are spring-pressed against their operating spiral cams 11 and guided by a ring 2 rotatable relatively to the chuck-housing 1, which is driven by a machine spindle. Cylindrical jawcarriers 10 in radial passages in ring 2 are biased by a spring 6 to press the jaws against the cams on a ring 3 fixed to the housing. Thus, upon rotation of the chuck, the cams close the jaws on to the work. The jaws pass through slots 12 in a cover 4 attached to ring 2 and by which the rotation of the ring may be retarded to close the jaws. Release of the jawclamping pressure while the chuck is rotating is by a lever 7 pivoted at 13 to housing 1 and moved against spring-pressure to. engage an abutment 16 on ring 2 and so rotate the ring and jaws relatively to the housing. The abutment is secured adjustably to the ring, as by a screw. For gripping a bore, the cams on the housing are directed outwardly to engage inner edges of the jaws. |
