The overdrive has a converter fed rotating field machine for performing field weakening operation within a region, where the number of turns per unit length effective at a clamp is minimized. The field machine can be an asynchronous machine with a short circuit rotor or a permanent magnet excited machine. The number of turns is reduced by a star delta connection or a serial parallel connection of double traction motors and by switching off the parts of the overdrive.
