An automatic packaging machine comprises a sleeve 15 carrying a supply of tubing 17, a reciprocating plunger 6 for pushing articles from cups 3 on an intermittently moving conveyer A through openings 5 in plate 4 and through sleeve 15, the articles engaging and drawing off a length of tubing 17 corresponding to the length of the articles, the tubing being then contracted behind the articles, fastened at two spaced lines and cut between the two lines. Two axially spaced pairs of arms 20, 21 have guide fingers 26, 27 and 29, 30 to contract the tubing when the arms are pivoted towards each other by cylinder 23; a cylinder 32 then actuates two devices 31, Figs. 4, 6, to fasten the tubing twice and knives 33, 34, Fig. 4, carried by arms 20, 21 cut the tubing. The filled bag then slides down an inclined table 37. The arms with the guide fingers may be replaced by rectilinear slides and the cylinders may be hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical with electric control. When all the tubing on sleeve 15 is used a freshly loaded sleeve replaces the old sleeve which is readily removable through a bayonet connection 14. The stroke of plunger 6 can be adjusted for different length articles or alternative sleeves and plungers of different diameter can be used. |
