Disclosed is an aqueous dispersion of a low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene, which contains an easily removable surfactant, while having good dispersion stability. Specifically disclosed is an aqueous dispersion of a low molecular weight polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE] containing a tetrafluoroethylene [TFE] unit, or containing a TFE unit and a modified monomer unit copolymerizable with the TFE unit. This aqueous dispersion of a low molecular weight PTFE is characterized in that a fluorine-containing compound represented by the general formula (1) below is contained in an amount of 70-9000 ppm relative to the aqueous dispersion, and the average primary particle diameter of the low molecular weight PTFE is 100-350 nm. X-(CF2)m-Y (1) (In the formula, X represents H or F; m represents an integer of 3-5; and Y represents -SO3M, -SO4M, -SO3R, -SO4R, -COOM, -PO3M2 or -PO4M2 (wherein M represents H, NH4 or an alkali metal, and R represents an alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms).)
