The invention relates to a compensation tank (1, 20) for a hydraulic motor vehicle brake system having a housing (4) having at least one pressure medium chamber (7), the housing (4) preferably comprising an upper housing part (5) and a lower housing part (6), a tank warning device (10, 10') for monitoring the tank fill level of the compensating tank (1, 20), a filling port (8) for filling the compensation tank (1, 20), a cover (9) for sealing the filling port (8) in a liquid-tight fashion, means for pressure compensation of the compensation tank (1, 20) and preferably a cup-shaped filling filter (11, 22) disposed in the region of the filling port (8) and having a wall (12, 21) and a floor (13, 24). In order to provide a cost-effective compensation tank that is simple to install, the filling filter of which securely prevents introduction of contaminants, the invention proposes that the wall (12, 21) of the filling filter (11, 22) be formed on the housing (4) of the compensation tank (1, 20) and extend adjacent to the tank filling port (8) into the pressure medium chamber (7).
