PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device of detecting the cetane number of fuel for an internal combustion engine, properly detecting the cetane number of fuel, by setting a condition easy to ignite fuel. SOLUTION: The device of detecting the cetane number of fuel for an internal combustion engine is suitably used for detecting the cetane number of fuel. Concretely, in the anterior half of a compression stroke, fuel is injected in fuel cut, and the cetane number is detected based on ignition timing when the fuel is injected in this way. Since the fuel is in a premixed state when the fuel is injected in the anterior half of the compression stroke in this way, the fuel is easy to ignition in the detection of the cetane number.
