It is an object to provide an image processing device and the like that can extract shade and shadow regions from an image picked-up by a snap shot without the necessity for such a large scale system as to fluctuate a light source. An image processing device (100) for carrying out a process with respect to shade and shadow regions of an object image is provided with an image information acquiring unit (110) for acquiring brightness information that is information of brightness of light from the object and information as to the object image including polarization information that is information of polarization of light from the object, a shade and shadow region extracting unit (120) for extracting a shade region on the object surface formed due to the impingement of light and a shadow region on other object surfaces formed due to light shielded by the object on the basis of the brightness and polarization information acquired by the image information acquiring unit (110), and an output unit (130) for outputting information that specifies the shade and shadow regions extracted by the shade and shadow region extracting unit (120).
