PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drive a recording head of an ink jet type so that in the case where two or more types of driving conditions are present, speedy switching between them and output are performed, and thereby not only high efficiency drive of the recording head but also energy saving are achieved. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus forms images by emitting ink from the recording head according to control signals transmitted from an image process control means for processing input image information into data. The image forming apparatus has a driving waveform generating means for generating a driving waveform used to drive the element of the recording head. The driving waveform generating means has the function performed such that after one of the types of the driving waveform is output and then another driving waveform is output, a waveform is generated to through-increase or through-decrease potential at a prescribed point of time after the output of the one driving waveform, with the potential of another driving waveform being as a target potential. The waveform to through-increase or through-decrease the potential is generated according to the value of an inclination obtained by comparing the target potential with the potential at the prescribed point of time.
