The apparatus, mounted on a transport vehicle, has an insertion arm for the sole plates (4) with a positioning mechanism comprising an upper plate (56) fixed to the vehicle, a lower mobile plate (54) to which the insertion arm is attached, and six or more power cylinders (58 to 63) that allow the mobile plate to be adjusted relative to the fixed plate with six degrees of liberty. The power cylinders are fixed directly to the upper plate and connected to the mobile plate by couplings (66) with three degrees of liberty in rotation, and have non-colinear elongation directions. During operation the power cylinders are positioned to move the insertion arm into a predetermined reference position set by a radiocontrolled laser measuring unit.
