An improvement in the process for the decondensation of polyethylene terephthalate to dimethyl terephthalate claimed in the parent Specification wherein from 0.1% to 2% by weight of a zinc compound in finely divided form is added to the polyethylene terephthalate. The zinc compound, which is preferably employed in the form of a suspension in methanol and supplied to a reaction vessel in admixture with polyethylene terephthalate, is a zinc salt of an organic or inorganic acid. Specified zinc compounds are zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, nitrate, chromate, fluoride and salicylate. |
