918,010. Change-speed gear. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. July 6, 1961 [Aug. 8, 1960], No. 24443/61. Class 80 (2). A four-speed and reverse change-speed gear, particularly for a vehicle having the engine mounted adjacent the driving axle, comprises an input shaft 10 and a concentric output sleeve shaft 12 carrying a bevel pinion 24 meshing with the ring gear of a differential on the axle shaft 64, with constant-mesh countershaft gears operated by friction-cone synchromesh clutches 86, 126 on the main and countershaft, respectively. The low-speed countershaft pinion 100 may be moved axially to the right to engage a reverse idler pinion meshing with a pinion 120 on the main shaft. First and second gears are engaged by moving clutch 126 to the right and left, respectively, and third and fourth gears by similar movements of clutch 86, the latter movement effecting direct drive between shafts 10, 12. Gear selection is effected by axial movement of shift rails 144, 146, 148 by an arm 47 on a shaft 149 moved axially by a bell-crank 150 and rotated by an arm 162, Fig. 4 (not shown). A shift interlocking mechanism is provided consisting of ball detents 168, 170, 172 for the rails 144, 146, 148 with cone-ended locking-bars 180, 182, 184 between detents 168, 172 and balls 174, 176 between the respective pairs of rails. |
