The engine (10) has an air injection device (30) with a pressurized air injecting unit (32) in an exhaust duct (28). A control unit (34) i.e. valve, controls injection of pressurized air in a combustion chamber (12) via a seat (26) of an exhaust valve (24) during opening of the valve (24) associated to an exhaust phase of the chamber. The control unit simultaneously controls an additional opening of the valve (24) and the air injection during an intake phase of the chamber. The injection and the opening are controlled to permit functioning of the engine along a compression self-ignition mode.
