A method for removing the sulfur compound and the acidic gas from the hydrocarbon gas stream in a caustic tower is provided to prevent the palladium catalyst poisoning and to lower cost. A method for removing the sulfur compound and the acidic gas from the hydrocarbon gas stream in a caustic tower(26) comprises the steps of supplying the supply stream(10) of gas state comprising hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans to the caustic recirculation zone of a multistage caustic tower having at least one caustic recirculation zone(30) and at least one flow type caustic recirculation zone(32); contacting the supply stream with the caustic stream circulating into the tower; sending the stream of gas state partially treated to the at least one flow type caustic zone; and contacting the stream of gas state partially treated with the caustic solution in the at least one flow type caustic zone to remove the mercaptans of the stream.
