PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogenation catalyst which has excellent catalytic activity and durability and is used for hydrogenation of a fatty acid or its ester and to provide a method for manufacturing the hydrogenation catalyst, a method for producing an iodine value-decreased fatty acid or its ester and a method for producing alcohol by using the iodine value-decreased fatty acid or its ester as a raw material. SOLUTION: The hydrogenation catalyst for hydrogenation of the fatty acid or its ester contains 10-85 wt.% (content as the metal oxide content in the total weight of the catalyst) at least one metal selected from Ni and Cu and has 0.15-1.0 mL/g pore volume of pores having 20-200 nm pore diameter. The method for manufacturing the hydrogenation catalyst is provided. The method for producing the iodine value-decreased fatty acid or its ester comprises a step of performing a hydrogenation reaction in the presence of the hydrogenation catalyst under the pressure of normal pressure to 30 MPa. The method for producing alcohol comprises the step of: using the iodine value-decreased fatty acid or its ester, which is produced by using the producing method, as the raw material; and performing a reduction reaction.
