A sliding type portable terminal is provided to enable a user to install a maximum size display device which can be allowed at the limited space of a terminal housing. First and second housings(101,102) are coupled to each other, facing each other. As the second housing slides in the direction of its length, a portion of the first housing is opened and closed. A link member(219) and an elastic member(203) are installed between the first and the second housing to provide a driving force which moves the second housing. A first end portion(219a) of the link member is coupled to the first housing so that the link member rotates at the first housing. The elastic member provides an elastic force by which the end portions of the first and second housings push against each other. A pair of coils at the elastic member cover a case(231), and first and second free ends(233,235) are extended to the outside of the case. At this time, the first and second free ends are connected to one of the coils and receive the elastic force form the coil.
