PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high carbon steel which is reduced in component costs with no inclusion of alloy elements, such as Ti and V, and has satisfactory fracture separability even in the case of low hardness level. SOLUTION: The high carbon steel with excellent fracture separability is characterized in having: a composition consisting of 0.70 to 1.20% C,≤0.4% Si, 0.9% Mn, 0.10% P,≤0.015% S, 0.5 to 2.0% Cr,≤0.05% Al and the balance Fe with impurities; an old austenite grain size of≥200μm; and a Brinell hardness of≤300.
