PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound useful as an electroluminescent material having excellent light emitting characteristics. SOLUTION: Provided is a silicon-biphenylene alternating polymer represented by the formula (1) (wherein R1and R2are each independently a group selected from the group consisting of an aryl group and a heteroaryl group; and R3and R4are each independently a group selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a vinyl group, an allyl group, a halogen atom, an aryl group and a heteroaryl group).
