An anhydrous organic per-acid, or a solution thereof, is made by dissolving an addition compound of H2O2 with urea in an anhydrous organic carboxylic acid. The water liberated in the formation of the peracid may be bound by addition of the anhydride of the respective organic acid so that the final product is a solution of the peracid in the carboxylic acid. If the carboxylic acid to be converted to the peracid is solid at room temperature, a solution of the acid in an inert diluent, preferably volatile, such as methylene chloride or a low boiling gasoline may be used. The process is preferably effected at temperatures in the range of 0 DEG to -15 DEG C. An example of the preparation of peracetic acid is given and per acids from propionic, butyric and caprylic acids can be made in an analogous manner. Specification 745,594 is referred to. |
