An ECU performs a program including a step (S106) of determining that a shift solenoid is abnormal if a target transmission ratio is within a predetermined range (YES in S100), an upshift is determined (YES in S102), and the shift solenoid is in an abnormal condition (YES in S104); a step (S108) of determining that the shift solenoid is normal if the shift solenoid is not in an abnormal condition (NO in S104); a step (S114) of determining that a belt pressing solenoid is abnormal if the target transmission ratio is substantially equal to a transmission ratio (?min) on the side where the speed is increased to a maximum level (YES in S110) and the target transmission ratio and an actual transmission ratio is substantially not equal to each other (No in S112); and a step (S116) of determining that the belt pressing solenoid is normal if the target transmission ratio and the actual transmission ratio are substantially equal to each other (YES in S112).
