PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for packaging wound coils of filamentary material in a container. SOLUTION: The apparatus has a boxing instrument for the wound coils of filamentary material, an end processing section, and a collapsible mandrel. In a first station the filamentary material is wound on the end processing section. A second station has a turret mechanism, a movable rear plate, a bottom plate and an inclined portion. A boxing station is displaceable to the second station to receive the wound coil from the mandrel. The boxing station receives an exploded box arranged on the bottom plate with the rear plate of the box being folded, and has a means for folding two oppositely disposed side plates of the box. The boxing station also has a means for folding flaps of the box to bond and seal them. A payout tube inserting means for inserting a payout tube in a payout hole of the wound coil through a payout hole in the top plate of the box includes means for grasping the free end of the wound coil and withdrawing it through the payout tube.
