A portable terminal and a charging method thereof are provided to offer an adaptor charging function and a USB(Universal Serial Bus) charging function through one connector. A connection unit(150) provides an interface for connection with an external device. The external device is a terminal such as a charging adaptor for charging a battery and supplying power to a portable terminal, a PC, a notebook computer and a PDA(Personal Digital Assistant). A power management part(160) performs the charging or data communication according to the kind of the external device connected to the connection unit. A controller(200) changes the operational mode of the portable terminal according to the kind of the external device connected to the connection unit.
