A electrical wall socket fitting includes phase, neutral and earth terminals and related pin sockets, and either a thermal sensor sensitive to temperature changes due to current flow through the outlet or, alternatively, a current sensor for current flowing through the outlet, an internal switch to interrupt current flow through the outlet, and a control circuit connected to the internal switch and the thermal sensor or the current sensor, to operate the internal switch to interrupt power flow through the outlet in the event of the temperature exceeding a predetermined threshold temperature or the current exceeding a predetermined threshold current. The control circuit also detects the voltage difference between the phase and at least one of the earth and neutral terminals and operates the internal switch to interrupt the power flow through the outlet if the voltage difference exceeds a predetermined voltage surge threshold or is less than a predetermined voltage sag threshold.
