A reinforced pole structure (10) having a hollow pole (20), a base plate (11), and an elongate reinforcement device (50) is disclosed. The pole is secured to the base plate and has an access hand-hole (22) near the bottom end. The reinforcement device, preferably in the form of two elongate reinforcers, is located against the interior surface of the hollow pole. The lower edges of the reinforcers are welded to the pole at the bottom end and the hole-adjacent edge(s) of the reinforcers are welded to a lip (22a) of the hand-hole. Preferably, the reinforcers have a far-side pair of edges which, at least in positions opposite the hand-hole, are welded to the interior surface of the pole.
