943,430. Making reels. J. HILL. Sept. 29, 1961 [July 15, 1961], No. 25726/61. Heading B3A. [Also in Division B8] A cable carrying reel comprises a hollow drum 21 and a pair of end cheeks each consisting of a plurality of coaxial annular decks 11, 13, 16 welded together and having radial folds 12, 15, 18 at regular intervals therein and axial flanges 10, 14, 17 at the inner peripheries of the decks, a hub part 20 being connected by arms 19 to the axial flange 10 of the innermost annular deck 11 and the two flanges 10 of the two cheeks being rigidly connected to opposite ends of the drum 21 by welding, brazing or by bolts and nuts. The hubs 20 are similarly secured to a hollow axle 23 of the drum 21 and a rim 25 is welded to the outer edge of the outer deck 16. In the construction of each deck 11, 13, 16 and its flange 10, 14, 17 respectively, the folds 12, 15, 18 may be formed at regular intervals in a blank prior to attachment of the flange thereto and the bending of the blank with the folds therein into annular form. Alternatively the blank may be fed between co-operating dies arranged to produce successive lateral folds which gradually vary in depth and width from one longitudinal edge of the blank to the other and simultaneously effect bending of the blank into annular deck form. |
